Heat pump is one of the most important or critical component of any HVAC system. They transfer heat or thermal energy from a colder source to a hotter location, which is opposite to the way heat is normally transferred in nature. Heat pumps are so effective that they can even get heat from seemingly very cold places like winter weather outside the house.
Heat pumps are known for their efficiency and reliability, but even the most reliable machines can sometime break down. Heat pump repair can be a complex task, but if the problem is not too technical one check it out and try to troubleshoot it.
Here, is the list of some common things that one can do to resolve basic problems.
-
Thermostat should always be set in the correct settings. Wrongly set thermostat can damage both the heat pump and other component. It can cause the heat pump to turn on and off too frequently.
Today’s thermostats are smart. There is a reason for calling them so. These smart thermostats can manage heat pump and other heating components to maximize the heating and also improve overall efficiency. Outside temperature is also taken account for providing comfortable heating inside the house. Temperature should be set gradually. Sudden increase or decrease in temperature settings can have a negative impact on the efficiency of the system.
Thermostat needs air sample to understand the heating requirements. Make sure that it is installed at a proper place where it can get the necessary amount of air.
There are coils in the outdoor condensing units. These coils should be cleaned with water on a regular basis. Free flow of air is needed around these coils. Keep them in an open space where the air flow is not obstructed. Sometimes during winter season ice accumulates on these coils. Like refrigerator there is a defrost cycle in heat pumps which takes care of this accumulated ice.
Clean the air filters regularly and replace them if necessary. Dirty air filter can contaminate atmosphere inside the house and cause health problems in family members.
Sometimes there are noises from the system. This sounds may be due to thermal expansion or a loose part. Make sure that the lose part is tightly screwed.
If the problems still persist call your HVAC service provider for repairing heat pump.
