Furnaces, be it electric or gas is something that should be left to professionals. Cleaning and adjusting is something that you can do, but anything other than that should require professional help. Here are some common problems that you can encounter if you have an electric furnace or heater. These tips would help you detail out the problem to the AC repair guy properly so he comes prepared for the job.
Furnace won’t turn On
Solution to this problem could be as simple as flicking the breaker on. But if the breaker is tripping again and again, then you would need an Electrician rather than an AC professional. Mostly no power is the reason why furnaces are not turning on. So first check all the power sources. Another reason why the furnace is not turning on is if the motor gets overloaded. If all the power connections are set right, then that’s possibly the reason why furnace is not getting on.
Not Enough Heat
There could be various reasons for that. The furnace won’t blow enough heat if the thermostat is set too low, filters are dirty, blower is clogged (which could be because of dirty filters), registers clogged (again, could be because of dirty filters), system out of balance, blower belt loose, element faulty. It’s not easy to check the blower, but you can always check filters and registers to make sure they are not dirty or blogged.
Turns on and off repeatedly
Turn off the furnace if its turn on and off repeatedly or it could lead to further damage. The reasons for furnace turning on and off repeatedly are because of dirty filter, motor or blower is running dry on lubrication or the blower is clogged. Again, apart from filters you should request AC repair guy to do repairs and check for problems.
Won’t Stop Running
If the blower of the furnace is not turning off, then you should definitely call a professional. The reason this could be happening is because the relays are faulty or the blower setting is wrong. If you have not seen someone working on the blower, then it might not be easy for you to know about the blower control.
Furnace Noisy
Once the furnace makes noise, check the access panels. If they seem loose, then tighten them up. The other reasons could be belts worn out or damaged or loose and/or the motor needs lubrication. All these repairs would require a professional AC repair guy.
